Look, Up in the Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman (2006)

IMDB rating: 8.00

Plot: In 1938, two aspiring comic strip talents, Jerry Siegal and Joe Shuster, published a character that would create a new genre of fantasy, Superman, the first superhero. This film explores the creation of the character and his subsequent evolution over the decades through various media. With various interviews of noted creative luminaries, the film shows how the character has adapted to the times and bounced back from times when he felt irrelevant to always regain his prominence as one of the great heroes of popular culture.

In the 'Superman' documentary, all living characters of the genre are interviewed except Tom Welling. Why?
In the documentary, "Look, up in the sky!: The amazing story of Superman", all living characters involved with the genre are interviewed except Tom Welling – who is the star of TV’s hit show, ‘Smallville’. Tom Welling has been a major contribution to the genre, and is a major celebrity still living. Why was he not involved? Did he refuse, or was he ignored? Or did other schedules conflict?

that is a pretty glaring omission. I haven’t saw it. was this the same show I saw on a&e a few months ago narrated by kevin spacey? it seems like there were 2 shows like that, one on a&e the other on discovery channel and I’m pretty sure I saw tom welling in one of them.
surely he wouldn’t refuse, and it wouldn’t take that long to get some clips so schedule conflict should be out. maybe he wasn’t because technically he isn’t superman yet.
but I’m sure I have saw him on some superman/superhero doc where he was talking about meeting christoper reeve in that one episode and his(tom’s) part in the grand scheme of things.
I’ll have to rent it

Game of Their Lives, The (2005)

IMDB rating: 6.10

Plot: In 1950, few soccer players in the United States played the game with any particular degree of expertise. Most Americans had heard about the soccer only by hearsay, even though it was the world’s most popular sport, and when the United States was invited to compete in the World Cup in Brazil, the country turned out to have no soccer team to call their own. The U.S. set out to recruit players in the soccer breeding ground of St. Louis, Missouri, where they found a group of young friends with almost absolute lack of an appropriate experience, only an unabashed love of the game.

Caligula (1979)

IMDB rating: 4.60

Plot: The rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula, showing the violent methods that he employs to gain the throne, and the subsequent insanity of his reign – he gives his horse political office and humiliates and executes anyone who even slightly displeases him. He also sleeps with his sister, organises elaborate orgies and embarks on a fruitless invasion of England before meeting an appropriate end. There are various versions of the film, ranging from the heavily- truncated 90-minute version to the legendary 160-minute hardcore version which leaves nothing to the imagination (though the hardcore scenes were inserted later and do not involve the main cast members).

Why don't other criminal dictators like Stalin seem to get as much attention as Hitler?
A lot of the dictators and others were also so hardcore, Joseph Stalin was a contemporary of Hitlers who ruled Communist Russia with an iron fist for so long, and killed more people than Hitler, Caligula was also bad***, he terrorized ancient Rome and had all those innocent people killed, Napoleon was a great leader who set out to conquer land. Also, who could forget peoople like Mao, Pol Pot, Vlad the Impaler, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, Alexander the Great? Lots of guys make history interesting to study.

stalin did get a lot of real bad press, the main problem is that he killed most if not all members of the media in the common purges of that era or sent them to live in the gulags of siberia, at any length, the results were the same, dead men dont tell a lot of secrets that the powers of the realm dont want sent out. bad and atrocious leaders in history are a dime a dozen and you forgot idi amin and a whole bunch of bad guys in africa, and thats still going on as this is written, and there are more, just keep reading

Because Hitler actually tried to exterminate several races of people. All of the others had the excuse of running a regime to make it ‘better for the ordinary people’. But Hitler openly tried to kill Jews, Pols, Gypsies etc…
Frankii | Dec 14, 2009

stalin was worse than hitler.
Notorious | Dec 14, 2009

Very simply, Hitler tried to kill the Jews and the Jews control the media. They have made Hitler the worst one because he was on to them and they want to be seen as the biggest victims. The fact that millions of non-Jews died under Nazi rule means nothing. Look at how much money Israel and the Jews have squeezed out of Germany and the West. Try getting a fraction of that for Africans, Indians, Ukrainians, or any group that suffered under tyranny and/or oppression. Jews cry the most and get the most.
william k | Dec 14, 2009

Here are my thoughts. Stalin, like the others you mention, was not from the Anglo-Saxon culture. Hitler was viewed as more "like us" and hence, his evils seemed to be magnified.
How could someone with whom we shared so much in common with be so unremittingly evil?
We have to remember that World War II took place at a time when our culture had little to share with Ancient Romans, Chinese, Cambodians, Wallachians, Mongols, Huns and Macedonians. Hitler as an almost "brotherly " figure seemed particularly odious.

Again, these are just some thoughts of my own.
JIMBO | Dec 14, 2009

Even though Stalin murdered between 30 to 50 million people, while Hitler murdered 17-20 million, the sheer brutality of how he went about murdering particularly women and children is what shocked the world. Stalin didnt have extermination camps nor did he target specific ethnic groups/commit genocide. Even Mao killed about 80 million, 4 times as many people as Hitler killed, yet how often do we in the west view Mao as a monster? Stalin was evil but as he was an "allie" during WW2 that also deadens the attention as compared to Hitler, whom most people agree is the absolutely most evil human being to have ever existed.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

IMDB rating: 7.50

Plot: During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, with greater fire power, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Russell Crowe brings great intensity to the role of Captain Jack Aubrey. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. While the naval battle sequences are quite fantastic, the film is successful because director Weir chose to build the story to get to know the men who are locked aboard the tight quarters of a small ship and how they interact everyday. The officers and the mates are well-known by the time the final battle comes. Paul Bettany offers a strong performance as the surgeon and naturalist who balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain’s friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together. The horrors of the injuries from the war are frequently implied, but vividly depicted in the reactions of the characters.

Book suggestions please…?
I would like to get some good new books for extra reading but i need suggestions!!!
I read at a higher level, and prefer romance novels.
The Time Travelers Wife, for example, is one of my all-time favorite books!
But I also like historical fiction, like the other Boleyn Girl, or mystery like a Bones series book.
So any suggestion really is appreciated!!

If you liked "The Other Boleyn Girl," try some more Phillipa Gregory. (She’s addictive.)

The Boleyn Inheritance
The Queen’s Fool
The Constant Princess
The Virgin’s Lover

and there are more.

Also, if you’d be interested in some American-based historical fiction, try the John Jakes bicentennial series that traces one family from pre-revolution to the 20th century. I read these when they were first written (waaaaay back in the 70’s), and still love them.

If you like those detective and forensic things, try Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta books. The character herself is a bit unbelievable. She’s a lawyer, M.D., Chief Coroner for the State of Virginia, special consultant to the FBI, oh… and she’s invisible, too. (hee hee. not really) But if you can suspend any cynicism about that, the books are fun to try to figure out, and they read quickly.

Have fun.

Well, Nora Roberts has written a ton of romance novels. Some take place in the present day, some don’t, and some have mysteries involved along with the romance. I have read the trilogy about the Pagan Stone/Blood Brothers so you can check those out. Other romantic books I have read are ones by Nicholas Sparks. I enjoyed "The Notebook," "The Guardian," and "A Bend in the Road." I’m sorry that I don’t know of too many historical fictions that are romantic. I’ve only read ones by people like Dan Brown. "Angels and Demons" has a romantic side-story, so who knows what you’re interested in. I hope you find something!

Well if you like classic romances you might like:
-To sir Phillip, with love by Julia Quinn
-Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
-Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Nicholas Sparks has some good love stories, ones I’ve read:
-The Notebook
-The Wedding
-The Rescue
-A walk to remember

Or you might like The long road home by Danielle Steel
It has a little bit of love in it but it’s mostly tragic.

Or you could try The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
It’s a book that really makes you think and it even has some love in it.

Hope this helps! (:

Plot: The inspiring story of the team that transcended its sport and united a nation with a new feeling of hope. Based on the true story of one of the greatest moments in sports history, the tale captures a time and place where differences could be settled by games and a cold war could be put on ice. In 1980, the United States Ice Hockey team’s coach, Herb Brooks, took a ragtag squad of college kids up against the legendary juggernaut from the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games. Despite the long odds, Team USA carried the pride of a nation yearning from a distraction from world events. With the world watching the team rose to the occasion, prompting broadcaster Al Michaels’ now famous question, to the millions viewing at home: Do you believe in miracles? Yes!

Polish film Katyn English SUBTITLES?
Does anyone know where you can get these subtitles in English from as I have searched and searched for them and they are nowhere to be found :O(
I would love to ?Martyna? but I have been going to that site for over two weeks now and have you seen the list of requests for it? They never seem to get round to it, shame really!! One of the most important films to come out of Poland for years and hardly anyone who doesn’t speak Polish cannot watch it.
I can watch it and understand maybe 70% of it but I really feel I want to watch and understand all of it :O(
Thanks for the link anyway :O)
I will be getting the subtitles on Friday as serduszko011 has kindly offered to do them for me as she has a English speaking boyfriend that she wants to show the film to.
If anyone has problems with playing the subtitles, may I suggest Best Player http://www.afreecodec.com/win/870/bestpl ayer-10-pl/ this player can edit the speed and position of the subtitles so they play in sync with the film. :O)
